Characteristics: floral aroma and notes of summer ripe peach & butterscotch
Roast Scale: 2 out of 10 darkness

Urth Dolce Espresso came about after a coffee expedition to Milano, Italy. We went to the most famous espresso bars and were astonished to discover how light the espresso blends were roasted, yet had such a sweet well developed flavor. This discovery kicked off a 14 year research on how to achieve this kind of well-developed light roast espresso. Typically coffee roasted so lightly will taste too acidic and watery. We finally discovered a careful slow, long roast profile along with a health quantity of low acid South American beans that created this amazing light roast espresso. Now this has become one of our most popular espressos at Urth Caffé! This espresso blend is remarkable for its wonderful sweetness (hence the name dolce) and its’ sparkling butterscotch flavor, and it is much milder than our classic Urth Italia Espresso blend.

Roast Scale: 5 out of 10 in darkness

Back in the early 90’s we journeyed from the North of Italy all the way to the South tasting literally hundreds of espressos from the most famous coffee bars of Italy. Just like culinary tastes, espresso preference also change from region to region. In Northern Italy we experienced the lightest roasted espresso blends, and in the Southern regions we found the darkest espressos. In Rome, medium roasts are preferred. We think a fine, medium roast applied to full bodied, excellent beans produces the best espresso. This is enough roasting to fully develop all of the natural acids and oils so that they will produce a red, syrupy crema. This roast also develops the sugars into a caramel richness without any burnt or dark flavor. Urth Italia is our Roman style blend producing a syrup red crema, roasted hazelnut, chestnut, apricot and spice, and a long finish.

Characteristics: a heavy, full bodied blend with a dark roast aroma
Roast Scale: 9 out of 10 in darkness

In the late eighties, our travels took us up the West Coast from San Francisco all the way to Seattle, Washington (and Vancouver). The most popular style of coffee at that time was definitely “French Roast” which was a solid, dark roasted coffee. We set out to master this popular style and make the smoothest, darkest French Roast around! Interestingly, some years later we had the chance to visit France and scour the country tasting coffee and studying styles…We found that most of the coffee in France was imported light roast blends from Italy! Even though the coffee was lightly roasted, we learned that the French prefer to brew their coffee very strong. It must have been the strength of the brew that inspired American West Coast Roasters to make dark roast the signature of a “French Roast.” At Urth we love our dark roasted Classic French – our heirloom beans allow us to develop a heavy, full-bodied, syrupy blend with a long lasting flavor and a very smooth finish. Enjoy a cup of Classic French and savor the dark roast aroma!

This maybe the darkest roasted coffee in the US or even the world! The roast room is thick with smoke when our cast iron roasting machine billows as we craft our Old Grandpa! Blend. We select the densest bean of the year that can withstand the heat without breaking – this is usually a strictly hard bean grade from Central America. This roast is brought to the limit of darkness – many times causing fires in our roaster! The results are worth the risk…we have crafted a coffee so soulful, with a deep smoky, licorice flavor – it has been compared to a fine whiskey. If you are an extreme dark roast lover – go no further you have found the ultimate!

Working directly with these dedicated farmers helps to preserve the land, the tribal way, animal species, and produces the healthiest, top quality, micro lot coffee for our loyal connoisseurs. . The farmers agreed to harvest only the ripe, heavy cherries exclusively from Typica trees for Urth Caffé. This year’s Colombian lot is only 10 hand selected bags of zero defect coffee - representing less than 1% of the total crop. The coffee is light roasted and has a superb flavor, sparkle and complexity of roasted peanuts, and sweet, red grapes.

Only mature, ripe beans of the highest quality are chosen, and are carefully handpicked and washed, then dried over wood fires. Only “strictly hard bean”—the highest grade of coffee beans—are selected for the rare Aurora Gold brand. The entire cycle of coffee production is designed to maintain the sustainable cycles of nature, with facilities for storing the unused bean pulp for use as fertilizer, and for cleansing and restoring the water used to process the beans so that it can be returned to environment without upsetting the local ecology. Until now, all of this unique heirloom Arabica coffee has been bought for the Japanese market; but now Urth Caffé has secured a supply for our customers. We are delighted to introduce Urth Caffé Aurora Gold coffee: A rare coffee that has been allowed to fully ripen before picking, creating a fine flavor with spicy chocolate nuances, bright citrus tones and a lush body.

Using only organic practices, solar energy, and water catchment, the farm soon became an oasis for birds, chameleons, and all plant life. The coffee appreciated the attention and soon became vibrant with red plump cherries. The rich volcanic soils of Hawaii and tropical climate allowed the coffee to thrive.
